Screen Design VS. Print Design

Web design has many significant differences compare with print design. Johnson (2006) states that print design is much more stable, long-lasting and controllable compared with web design. According to European Commission (2012) and Morkes & Nielsen (1997), people will not read through every single word when reading the web design and website. They scan and scroll for the information that they like which are normally different from those people who are reading print design like newspaper.

Newspaper (Print Design)

Blog (Screen Design)

Bear (n.d.) stated that the Typography using in print design is different from web design, as what looks good on print does not necessary suitable and can be viewed in the web design. Print design normally can use more typography as it is fixed by print out. Web users may not be able to view the same fonts as what had been designed when they are using different web browsers and softwares (Mac, Windows).

New York Times Newspaper

We can see the New York Times Newspaper has been using more than 10 types of different fonts (typographic) in its front page, which the design and graphics will be the same for all its copies

Web design usually utilises the function called Navigation which allows the existence of hypertext and links that users can click on and link it to another useful resources (Nielsen 1999) which cannot be performed by print design.
From above, the circle is the links that provide further information for users from other sites.

This is the most typical type of navigation function that used by many websites and blogs.

Nielsen (1999) also states that print design like Newspaper caused immense impacts to readers as its space, font types, speed and quality are better than web design.

It is harder to read online, therefore, the layout of web design required lesser text, in bullet form, and lesser graphic as reader are impatient to wait for the images. It has small canvas compared to print design (huge canvas) which has more texts and graphic (Morkes & Nielsen 1997; Nielsen 1999). Nevertheless, web can provide more information and animation effects that would not be seen in print design.

New Forms of Media Publishing

Nowadays, media publishing has totally formed a new trend compared with decade ago. Traditional media publishing has been substituted by new forms of media like Youtube, Facebook, Tumblr and others.

Types of New Media Publishing

Audiences find that viewing news online is easier and popular than viewing traditional printed news. Naughton (2006) stated that the invention of digital, internet and computer softwares have significantly improved public's life and emerge the new media ecosystem. Internet and digital created a new form of 'citizen' journalists that concentrating on publishing news and latest information to the public.

Traditional social media are very costly and time-consuming whereas new media social of internet are not only time and cost saving, it is also considered as the fastest media to spread news.

New Social Media VS. Traditional Media

Facebook is one of the most successful social networks in recent years. It has more than 845 million active users on their site (Alexander 2012). Facebook users can share their personal information and their preferences and interest with others. Users also can publish their latest news via Facebook. For example, we can find much news about dog abuse cases via Facebook. By using the power of sharing through the pages and the proactiveness of the users, bloggers have successfully identified the abusers and created public awareness. News can be easily spread out by using internet.

Facebook pages that concern about Dogs and Animals

Nowadays, newspaper companies also choose to launch online news in order to capture more readers and youngsters who rarely read newspapers. The Star, one of the largest newspaper companies also provides online news to report latest news and information to its audiences (The Star Online 2012).

Blogging Communities

It is fairly easy and convenience to build up communities via blogging (Roberts & Kraynak 2009). Blogging community is defined as a group of people that sharing the same views, interests and thoughts, linked their blogs together in a community to form a blog community which can help to attract more readers (Whitepaper 2007). Most of the blogs are interconnected with other blogs. Many bloggers will follow some other blogs that they found to be interesting which make them to form a community. Most of them classified themselves in different communities like Blogger, Blogosphere, warblog and so on (Myers 2010, p.24).

According to White (2006), there are three types of blog communities as follows:
1.Single/One Blog Centric Community:
There is one specific blogger who owned this community and act as the main person in the community.

        2. Topic Centric Community
This is formed by the bloggers who shared similar topics like cooking topics. They normally linked their blogs together and shared the same power. They did not use the same technology platform, which only linked by hyperlinks, RSS, feedbacks and posts.

 3.Boundary Communities
This is most similar form to the traditional forum which is built up by a group of blogs and blog readers that register or join themselves in a site or blog.

ReadMyDay.com (http://www.readmyday.co.uk) is a Boundaried community that established in United Kingdom. This community allows its users to write on the topics that they interested in and showing all the hot topics and Blog of the Months (most popular) in the homepage. ReadMyDay allows the users to link together and sharing through RSS to view individual blogs (Whitepaper 2007).

Classification of Blogs & Opinion About the Most Appropriate Classification Approach.

Nowadays, there are many different types of blogs. According to Simons, pamphleteering blog is categorized as an old style blog that allows bloggers to write argumentative essay and to express their real thoughts on the current issues, like political blogs (Funnell 2008). Funnell (2008) indicated that there are a few different types of blogs like advocacy, personal, diary, advertisement and others. Diary and personal blog are the most popular blog types that public prefer to use to record their daily life and feelings.

                                                                       Political Blog

According to Walden and Thoms (2007, p.p18-19), classification of blog is based on the presentation or the writing style of the blog's contents. The authors have classified blogs as follows:
1. Vlog: Use the videos, images as the main content of the blogs.
2. Linkblog: Sharing the links from other websites or blogs.
3. Moblog: Use the mobile device like handphone to write the blog.
4. Political blogs: About the elections and other political issues.

Miletsky (2010, p.126) also classified blogs as follows:
1.Personal blogs: daily feelings and thoughts.
2.Media blogs: mostly are written by newspapers and media.
3.Business blogs: Businesses use it to keep closed with customers
4.Microblogs: Writing down brief and short sentences about their expression.

There are many different types of blogs and most of them are mixtures of different types of blogs. I believe that the best classification tool is based on the writing styles and images that used in the blogs to determine what kind of blog there are. If the writing style is more handy and relating to daily life, then it is considered as a personal blog. If the writing style is more artistic and accompanied with more images, then it should be vlog. If a blog is full of business information and advertisements, it should belong to business blog.
